The department has research interest in several areas of nephrology. The work is co-ordinated by Dr Ed Lamb who was appointed Director of Renal Research in 2004.

The research work is regularly presented at national and international meetings and the department has won several awards. A full time renal research registrar is currently working on the NEOERICA study in collaboration with the IT Department at the University of Kent. There has been regular representation and presentation of prize winning research work by the nursing staff in meetings in UK and abroad.
